THIS TIME HE was going to Freaknik. No doubt. Jasmine’s communiqué had rolled off his mind, and he was itching to go. Although only Monday, Nick considered this third week in April “Freak Week.” Even though the trek would not begin until Wednesday night around eight when he scooped up Craig, the days leading up to that evening could only serve as a precursor to the main event.

Nick decided to get ready for Freaknik by honing his social skills. Time to talk to Professional Black Woman. Nick dressed nice every day but he paid special attention to putting on cologne and his favorite dark gray ankle-length coat. The social barrier would be broken today. He bounded to the Fullerton station just in time to catch a train heading Downtown. Nick caught a glimpse of Professional Black Woman—stepping into another car. Drat! Foiled again.

Engaged by a huge project at work, Nick’s workday flew by. In the hour between work and his History of Theatre class at the Theatre School, Nick commando shopped at Water Tower Place, an elegant, self-contained shopping mall situated along Chicago’s ritzy Michigan Avenue shopping district. He felt a bit foolish buying up tank tops and denim shorts in the midst of a typically inhospitable Chicago spring. Actually, according to Craig, Chicago only had two seasons, summer and winter. With the forty-degree temperatures outside, Chicago’s second season seemed a wish away. Far more reason for Nick to head down to Atlanta where spring meant temperatures in the low seventies.

His History of Theatre class was mildly interesting, but Nick missed the variety and challenge of his Acting for Nonmajors class, where he had culled an A from his biggest fan, the instructor. But by keeping up with this class, he was sticking to The Plan. This class, however, lacked Craig and his boundless enthusiasm for whatever was “cool.” After an uninspired workout following class, Nick stumbled home and fell asleep on the couch watching BET.

Tuesday seemed to follow the same uneventful pattern. He saw Professional Black Woman at the train platform that morning, but dared not speak. She wore headphones and a scowling Angry Black Woman look that Nick could identify with, as he often used his Angry Black Man look to ward others off. At lunchtime, Nick finished up his Freaknik shopping with a trip to Marshall Field’s. He killed the time between work and his classes at the B-school by reading books at an African-American bookstore in the mini-mall on the bottom floor of the DePaul Center. After buying two political action thrillers by some hotshot young writer from Morehouse for riding material, Nick trudged on to two classes in finance that failed to capture his interest. In his mind, he was already riding out on Atlanta’s Memorial Drive, stuck in a traffic jam with fifty thousand other people who all looked young, black, and single like him. By the time Nick made it home around ten, his mind was already Atlanta-bound. He was eagerly packing a large duffel bag when the phone rang.
